My buddies took our 26′ Seaswirl down to the 26 rock on Friday and caught 4 wahoo, 1 mahi mahi and 5 small yellowfin tuna. The highlight of the day may have been the 300 pound black marlin that crashed the spread but refused to stay hooked.
Today we went back down to the 26 rock and caught 3 nice mahi mahi, 2 yellowfin tuna and 2 jack. The highlight of today was the 400 pound black marlin that came up and charged the moldcraft teaser and then disappeared. I looked back in time to see him charging the teaser with the whole front of his body out of the water and his mouth wide open.
We had a great day and everyone we know is eating fish for dinner. I have my sashimi, soy and wasabi ready with a few beers for the baseball and football games…life is good.
There always seem to be some black marlin at the 26…especially during the full moon….maybe next time.
October 28, 2009 - Costa Rica Fishing
The rain started a week ago Monday and was pretty steady the first 6 days with all day rain, wind and clouds. The past couple days we have seen some sunshine during the day with some showers at night and early in the morning…so the weather is on an upswing.
Every October we get a week or two of all day rain and crappy weather…this year it was later than usual but it still came. The best part is it signals the end of rainy season and the start of our summertime with good weather and good fishing.
The past two Novembers have been great months offshore so we are all looking forward to the next few months and some good offshore action.
There have been a handful of boats going out here and there. Most boats seem to be getting plenty of mahi mahi in the 30 to 40 pound range with the occasional sailfish, marlin and tuna.
I heard the weather on the Caribbean side was improved and the tarpon bite was good. I was hoping to get over there and fish a couple days but not this week.
October 21, 2009 - Costa Rica fishing in the rain.
We have been spoiled this rainy season with sunny days and very little rain. A couple days ago it opened up and its a little like Forest Gump said…
“We been through every kind of rain there is. Little bitty stingin’ rain… and big ol’ fat rain. Rain that flew in sideways. And sometimes rain even seemed to come straight up from underneath.”
This is common for October and the Pacific coast and should only last a week total…we hope. The good thing is once the rain ends it’s un officially the start of summer time and good fishing.
There have been a boat or two going out each day and there are catching good numbers of yellowfin tuna to 50 pounds and mahi mahi to 40 pounds. The bite has been 20 to 30 miles out.
October 17, 2009 - Mahi mahi and tuna fishing Costa Rica
Things around the marina have been a little slow the past few weeks with just a couple boats going out everyday. The weather has been very nice for mid October with mostly sunny days and calm seas. Mid October the past few years and been very rainy.
Most of the boats have been going offshore anywhere from 15 to 35 miles and catching lots of mahi mahi with some yellowfin tuna and sailfish mixed in.
A couple guys went out on the 28′ center console the day before yesterday and caught over 20 mahi mahi in the 30 pound range. A few days earlier they released 3 sailfish and kept 5 nice mahi to 30 pounds and 5 nice tuna to 60 pounds.
One of the private boats went 30 miles out to the craters yesterday and caught 15 tuna in the 30 to 40 pound range…they also caught a handful of mahi mahi
My friends and I went out for a 1/2 day of mahi mahi fishing about 15 miles across the bay near Tambor and we caught 3 mahi all in the 30 pound range. We had 6 or 7 good bites but missed a few and a few jump off.
I talked to some guys that went out on a panga and caught 18 mahi mahi in the 30 pound range…they found a tree floating in the gulf and loaded up.
October 6, 2009 - costa rica deep sea fishing
Things have been slow around the dock the past week. it seems like just one or two boats going out per day. The weather has been really nice with sunny days and small seas but there just not many people fishing. My buddies are still out of town so our boats still in the rack with a fresh coat of wax.
The guys on the 27 Shamrock went out to the craters yesterday and caught 18 mahi mahi in the 30 to 40 pound range. The captain said after a while he tried to drive away from the mahi mahi because he was running out of bait and still wanted to get the guys a chance at some sailfish. When I saw the captain he was buying limes and peppers so he could make some mahi mahi ceviche.
I received an email from another angler that fished this week and they caught a dozen 15 pound yellowfin, 7 nice mahi mahi and a couple wahoo on day 1. They followed that up with a handful of big mahi mahi and 4 sailfish releases on day 2. That’s good fishing for October.
September 30, 2009 - Fishing Costa Rica
The best fishing in Costa Rica the past week has probably been the tarpon fishing on the Caribbean side. The guys on the Caribbean coast are averaging 5 or 6 tarpon releases per days with nice weather and flat seas. I am going over next week for some tarpon fishing.
There has only been a couple boats going out each day out of the Los Suenos Marina near Jaco Beach. When there are only a few boats going out each day it’s hard to get fishing reports. My buddies have all been out of town so I had our boat pulled out of the water for a good cleaning and wax job.
I did talk to a couple guys at the marina today and they said some of the private boats have been going out and catching some marlin, sailfish and mahi mahi. I heard one boat had 3 marlin….makes me want to put the boat in the water and giv it a shot this weekend.
September 25, 2009 - Tarpon Fishing Costa Rica

One of my friends just got back from a couple days of tarpon fishing out of Los Chilis, Costa Rica.
They actually fished the San Juan River in Nicaragua. They averaged 3 tarpon hook ups and one tarpon release per day. The fish were all 100 to 150 pounds.
The area is very beautiful and very remote. I fished there a few years ago and hooked up with a 200 plus pound tarpon for 15 minutes before she spit the lure.
September 23, 2009 - Costa rica fishing
Hola,
Not many boats going out this week. The guys I did talk to were catching some sailfish, mahi mahi and small tuna. I didn’t hear about any marlin bites but we all know they are out there.
The guys on the 28′ Carolina Classic took a fly fisherman out for a half day of roosterfishing…they had a couple chances but no luck. If your a fly fisherman you would rather catch one on the fly than 5 by conventional tackle. The payoff can come with just one nice fish.
We took some friends from Holland out into the bay Tuesday for some kayaking and boating (beer drinking). It was a little windy but still sunny and nice. The visitors spent most of their time swmming and kayaking but did manage to catch a couple nice mackerel.
My friends and I were just talking about how nice the weather has been for rainy season. October is our wettest month so we still have to get through that but we have really had a nice rainy season with warm days, light winds and below average rain.
Today I woke up thinking we may have spoke too soon. It’s dark and rainy…like late September should be….good tuna weather.
September 20, 2009 - fish Costa Rica…mahi mahi, tuna and amberjack
amberjack-pirate-small.jpg
Today my friends and I ran down the 26 rock for a day of fishing. The ocean was flat, the water was a nice blue and the weather was almost perfect.
The bonita were everywhere…we must have caught 30 of them while trolling. We used the little ones and did some live bait and dead bait fishing around the rock. I caught a 30 pound mahi mahi and my buddy caught a 60 pound amberjack and we also caughta handful of 10 and 15 pound yellowfin tuna.
We probably could have stayed there and caught more but we heard rumors of a decent sailfish bite out by the corner so we trolled out that direction. At the end of the day we got covered up by 30 pound mahi mahi and we caught a double and came home.
Everyone I know is eating good tonight.
September 18, 2009 - Tarpon fishing Costa Rica
The good weather and the good tarpon fishing should continue for the next month or more on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica.
Our tarpon captain has been averaging 5 or 6 tarpon releases per day in the Tortuguero area. The tarpon are running between 125 to 150 pounds.
I am still planning on getting over there in the next few weeks.
